Friends?

Something that we read about in the last section of Capote's novel, "In Cold Blood", are the roles of one of Perry's old friend and someone he was in war with, which is Don Cullivan. Don Cullivan writes Perry a letter telling him that he remembers everything about Perry. He writes in his letter, "I remember you and would like to help you in any way that I can. From what I remember, though, I got along with you very well and rather liked you. You always seemed cheerful, and you were good at your army work," he tells Perry (260-261). I was wondering why Don Cullivan is just starting to write to Perry now, after he heard of the murders. Usually when someone hears of murders, and they know the person who did it, they tend to shy away from that person and tend to not talk to them. That is not how Don Cullivan was. He offered his help to Perry during his trial times and just in general, and he also went to visit Perry in his jail cell just to talk to him. Don Cullivan definately picked a weird time to start to talk and become friends with Perry again, like he was with him in the army. Another familiar person to one of the killers is Floyd Wells. Floyd knew Dick when they both were in prison. There, he became friends with Dick and started talking to him about the Clutters. This eventually led to the murders of the whole Clutter family. Floyd Wells reappears in the last section of "In Cold Blood", as someone who tells the story to the jury. He is going against Dick and Perry, and is throwing out his friendship with Dick in order to tell the jury the truth in order to convict Dick and Perry of the murders of the Clutter family. Dick had some words for Floyd as he was walking out of the courtroom, "Sonofabitch, anybody out to hang, he ought to hang," talking about Floyd (285). Floyd threw out a friendship, and Don tried to get one back. Floyd did the common thing that someone would usually do, and Don did the unheard of thing which was trying to re-start his friendship with Perry.
