Redemption

In the fourth and final part of in cold blood Perry is given several chances for redemption and both accepts some and ignores others. When Perry tells the truth about the murders and how it was actually him who personally killed all of the clutters it was his way of trying to get the truth out there before his inevitable hanging. Admitting to the world that he was the killer is him trying to get some redemption himself without the help of others, however when the priest offers him redemption in the eyes of god if he becomes Christian. He refuses on the grounds that he doesn’t believe in god. I believe that this is partially true but the part that he is leaving out is that he doesn’t want other people to help him gain something that he believes should be done on his own. He believes that if someone helps him gain redemption then it isn’t true redemption and it wouldn’t count. Perry believes that the truth is worth far more than anything god could possibly give him. He also knows that Dick does believe in god and he wants to clarify it for everyone that dick, although evil, never actually killed anyone and he didn’t commit any crime at the clutters house besides breaking and entering and theft he didn’t deserve the death penalty. He deserved the proper time in jail for those crimes which was 15 years at the most. Never does theft deserve the death penalty.
