Characters

Throughout the first part of the book I couldn't sympathize with Nancy Clutter or Dick. Nancy was too perfect in my eyes. It seemed like she didn't have any flaws about her. Capote describes her as this fabulous seventeen year old who could do just about everything, "...she felt it her duty to be available when younger girls came to her wanting help with their cooking, their sewing, or their music lessons...still managed to 'practically run that big house' and be a straight-A student, the president of her class, a leader in the 4-H program..." (18). Capote has a whole list on her and the many things she does. Nancy is just too perfect to be true. Nancy also was making the bridemaids dresses for her sister's wedding. She seventeen that is responsible and can be trusted by many. There are few few twenty or thirty year olds that can't be trusted like she was. I really couldn't sympathize with her because she had so much to handle and have a boyfriend, I don't know how she made time to sleep. Another character I couldn't sympathize with is Dick. Unlike Perry who sensitive side and pain is shown more than Dick's. In my opinion it seems like Dick planned the whole murder out and Perry was there to help or come along for the ride. Even when Dick is fixing up the car Perry is his little assistant, " With Perry assisting him" (23). Capote also sympathizes more with Perry than Dick, "He deserved no salary for the work he planned to do this morning" (23). Capote makes it seem like Dick was the tough guy that planned it and he killed them. In reality the reader knows that Perry had an equal part in the murder. I sympathized with many of the other characters because they were either too perfect or came off as evil to the reader.
