effect of the muders

The rural town of Holcomb, Kansas before the murders was quaint and peaceful.. After the murders it seem as if chaos broke out. For example Mother Truitt is having a normal day collecting the mail bags from the trains. When she saw two ambulances rush off to the Clutter's house she immediately stopped what she was doing and ran to the federal building. The way Capote describes it as if Mother Truitt couldn't believe something bad would ever happen to the Clutter's. She probably would of reacted differently if there was only one ambulance, because it could of been for Bonnie, but two seemed to be to the extreme with her. The book also explains how all of Holcomb couldn't sleep because they were afraid it might happened to them. The people that were effected the most is Bobby Rupp and Susan Kidwell. Susan is effected because she actually saw her bestfriend's body laying there lifeless with blood on the wall. Susan tries to shove it off, "No she isn't. And don't you say it. Don't you dare. It's only a nosebleed. She has them all the time, terrible nosebleeds, and that's all it is" (60). Susan tries her best to make a big thing so minor. I think deep down inside she knew Nancy was dead but wasn't ready to face it. Susan knew as soon as Bobby finds out he was going to be heart broken and distraught. Susan knew it that's why she couldn't tell him. When Bobby did figure out he was quiet the whole day, he even walked to the Clutter's house I think to see if it was true. The murders definitely had a detrimental effect on Holcomb.
