Dick and Perry
The two murderers Dick and Perry have a very unorthodox relationship; they have very subtle hints in their dialogues and their actions that indicate their real emotions. One example of this is how the two always say things like honey and darling to each other. This is hinting to wards maybe a hidden homosexual relationship between them sort of like Rope by Alfred Hitchcock where one person got dragged in to the murder by the other person because of a hidden homosexual relationship. Another example is how dick is jealous of Perry for getting to commit the murders. I believe that Dick had planed to kill them all along but the fact that Perry actually did it makes him feel empty inside so he tries to fill that by eating. The reasoning behind my accusation is that Dick would do such things as try to purposely hit animals with his car and kill them. This is basic serial killer actions; I believe that dick is so messed up that if things had gone a little differently that night then he would have killed Perry just to protect himself. Another example is when Willy Jay sends Perry the second letter it further describes how Perry has always had a monster hidden beneath his skin and when Mr. Clutter looked at him weird he snapped and the monster showed through, so he brutally killed an entire family. These things are just a few of the subtle things that you might have missed when reading that play an important part in the story.

I feel like you make a good point when you say “if things had gone a little differently that night then he would have killed Perry just to protect himself.” Dick is interesting in a different way than Perry. It is arguable that Dick seems to be more ‘sane’ than Perry or at least his actions are more predictable. He thinks out his moves before he does them. Perry, on the other hand, is unpredictable. From what we know in the movie, Perry suddenly had a rising anger and he killed Mr. Clutter. Dick tends to have consistent tendencies, like running over dogs on the road. But it is obvious that Dick is no less dangerous than Perry. He would kill someone to protect himself, his innocence. And at times it feels like Dick is thinking about doing just that to Perry; he thinks about getting rid of Perry in case he screws up. In Mexico, Dick got so angry when Perry kept blabbing on about the murder, that night, and the investigations. He is a type of guy who would just snap and kill Perry. Also, when Perry was talking about all the money they would find in Mexico, Dick wasn’t listening and I feel like this is a major reveling point in the story on the relationship between Dick and Perry. It seems that Dick actually isn’t thinking about Mexico and, more importantly, Perry and instead is thinking about escaping, on his own.
