Its been clear throughout the book that Dick shows no real compassion for Perry. He uses a false front of friendship, trust and understanding in order to make Perry follow his plans to rob the Clutters. Then, after Perry murders the family, Dick uses the same farce to drag Perry around the country and to make sure Perry doesn't confess. This is why it comes as no surprise that Dick would simply give up Perry during his interrogation. After Mr. Church tells Dick that he will be convicted of 4 counts of murder Dicks says, " 'Perry Smith killed the clutters.' He lifted his head and slowly straightened up in the chair, like a fighter staggering to his feet. 'It was Perry I couldn't stop him' "(230). This is just another way in which Dick has let Perry down. It appeared before that Dick felt like Perry is a burden for him, but has the responsibility to take care of him. Dick doesn't understand Perry, or how he can just kill people, but is forced to supervise him after the murder. I think put up with Perry because he has the same relationship with his parents: they don't understand him and don't why he acts out but except him.
After giving up Perry, however, it seems as if his companionship with Perry was a complete and total sheist in order to keep Perry quiet about the murder.
