Does Dick Deserve The Death Penalty?

In In Cold Blood the two “killers” Dick and Perry both go down for murder and after years of appeals finally get the death penalty, but does Dick really deserve it? In my opinion he doesn’t truly deserve the death penalty. He doesn’t deserve it for a few reasons. The first reason being that he never actually killed anyone. During the murder of the clutters Dick made a plan in which to break in to the house and steal money from the Clutters because he heard that there was ten thousand dollars in the house. Although dick may have wanted to kill the clutters he never actually did which makes him an accessory to murder which, although a serious crime is nowhere near as serious as a quadruple homicide. Some people would say that because he wanted to kill the clutters and was there that it makes him as much of a killer as Perry. Although Dick enjoys killing animals with his car and would probably have killed the clutter had he gotten the chance he still never actually committed murder, he is a sick man and should be admitted into a mental institution not be put to death for murders he didn’t actually commit. In the movie it said how Dick wanted to have his way with Nancy but Perry wouldn’t allow it. Although Perry didn’t allow rape he was ok with quadruple homicide? It is as I said before how even though dick contemplated killing the clutters he never actually did it and therefore doesn’t deserve the death penalty.

  1. I disagree with Ryan. I believe that Dick deserves the same penalty as Perry. Although Dick does say that Perry had killed all the Clutters, but Perry says he killed two and Dick killed the other two. Quite frankly I think Perry’s story is true. Dick also made the plan to rob the Clutter’s in the first place. He wanted to tie them up like they were going to die anyway. If they were going to keep them alive, they would have been arrested on a lot of charges of robbery, breaking and entering and probably some other charges. Either way Dick AND Perry would have been screwed no matter what. Even if the Clutter’s were still alive it would have went against Dick’s “no witnesses” motto. Also, Dick could have stopped Perry from killing Mr. Clutter, since they both agree on Perry was the murderer of Mr. Clutter. Although I do agree with Ryan that Dick and Perry need to be put into a hospital or an asylum because neither one of them are normal.

  2. I agreed with Ja'Nae on this one. Dick and Perry should both receive the death penalty. Even though Dick wasn't the one who actually pulled the trigger and ended the lives of the Clutter's, he still played a huge role in them dying in the first place. It was his initial idea to go into the Clutter home and rob them. He was the one who coaxed Perry to come along with him, toying with his emotions and playing with his mind sending him mixed messages. In preceding pages of the book doesn't Dick say that Perry possessed something that he never had? A willingness to kill if need be? Dick knew what type of person Perry was before they stepped foot into the Clutter's home, making him equally guilty as Perry, if not more.
